What can I expect from the advocacy process?

Each case is unique to the family’s situation. Typically, advocates review records and make a recommendation to call a school meeting to address any concerns (e.g., IEP meeting; 504 meeting, suspension meeting). Advocates attend the meeting with the client and follow up on any action items generated from the meeting. We will keep in touch with the client throughout the following weeks and months as needed—according to the client’s comfort level—in order to ensure changes made to the child’s programming are working.

will Beacon advocates attend school meetings with me?

Yes. Advocates will attend meetings and advocate on your behalf or alongside you as desired (this will typically be discussed during your consultation). Because advocates do not hold educational rights to make decisions in your place, advocates can not attend meetings without the parent or guardian present.

How long can I expect to want to continue with advocacy services?

This is based on client preferences and student need. Some clients maintain advocacy services throughout their child’s education; some clients only engage an advocate for a single meeting.

What do I need to do to initiate services with a Beacon advocate?

Reviewing and signing the Consulting Agreement after an initial consultation with an advocate will trigger any further action discussed between you and your advocate. Typically, your advocate will ask you to gather and send documents for their review; once all paperwork is forwarded, your advocate will review and develop an informal Records Review report within a week and schedule a meeting to review their findings and give suggestions for next steps.

Do you take insurance or LISS funding?
