Since my daughter was about 3, I have been trying to get services for her to address her articulation and reading needs. I have been struggling, fighting, searching, frustrated, hurt and angry with the public school system because I never truly felt heard and it seemed as though what was being offered to our family/my daughter was the bare bones and not quite addressing her needs holistically or for the long term. When she was about 7 we started to make headway once we sought 3rd party support. Even when we were working with a supportive school team, the IEP process was confusing, filled with professional educator jargon, and just overall difficult to understand if the goals were meeting her needs.
I found Beacon a few months ago after a determined Google search and that's when I connected with Katy. She listened to our journey, took notes, asked for the documentation that I collected over the years and did a thorough review and write up of potential compliance issues and suggestions for a better IEP. I shared her write up with a family member that recently retired from public school administration and she said that even if Katy didn't do one more thing to help us, the write up was so valuable. But Katy has done more. My husband and I are thrilled to have a partner to sit in IEP meetings with us, ask very specific questions that make the IEP pause and consider if what is currently in the plan in best for my daughter and if not, how it can be better.
My daughter just turned 9. It's only been a couple of months that we have been working with Katy but we are seeing great results with administrators in how they respond to us, Katy and of course in delivering the services that my daughter needs. I don't believe that public school administrators were intentionally not meeting our needs, but they are busy and have a lot of students to tend to, hiring an advocate like Katy also helps them do their jobs better.
